Why you Should Book a Winter Photography Session!

When we start to think about updating our family portrait or scheduling a fun couple or engagement photography session, we often gravitate towards the popular fall or spring seasons. The weather is warmer than February but not too hot like in the middle of July! But have you considered braving the cold Canadian winter and having beautiful winter photos taken? The snow creates such a beautiful, unique and timeless backdrop!

Colour and Lighting

As a photographer, I need to point out the technical benefits of having a photography session in the winter. In my opinion, the sun in our area is often diffused a little in the winter which makes it less harsh but the snow helps reflect it’s light which makes for beautifully lit images and less shadows. Lighting and surroundings influence colours of photos although we can adjust our white balance and settings on our cameras the snow really helps make colours pop.

Activities

If you love a good candid photo, winter gives you the opportunity to have fun play in the snow, laugh and cuddle up to keep warm!

Outfit Choices

This is a big one, one of the top questions I get asked as a photographer. “What should we wear?” My answer to this is LAYERS! Layers not only photograph well but they will keep you warm! Don’t be scared to accessorize with a hat, scarf, mitts…. Even bring a blanket to wrap around you all for a nice cozy photo!

Over the last few years, I have photographed quite a few photography sessions in the winter and I have to say… as much as I’m not usually a fan of the cold, the moments captured are always beautiful, timeless and fun!
