Top 3 Things to Consider When Choosing Headshot Background

As we are once again pushed right back to a full digital world we are getting more inquiries here at Now Forever Photography about booking headshots. Headshots seem simple in theory, it’s a portrait of your face but a lot more goes into executing the perfect headshot to represent you. If you think of your websites digital content or even your professional online presence as a house your headshot would be the foundation to your personal brand or if you rather think of it as a wardrobe it would be the equivalent of a staple piece.

Here are our top 3 things to consider when choosing a location/background for your professional headshot.

The Industry

The type of career you have or hope to have will influence the location and type of headshot you’ll want. Each industry typically leans towards a certain standard/style but it doesn't mean you need to stick to it if it doesn’t resonate with your goals or clientele. If you want an idea of what you should be doing LinkedIn is a great place to start your brainstorming or visit the websites of other professionals in your field.

Weather

If you are hoping to have a beautiful headshot taken in an outdoor setting we will need to consider a few things such as the season, the amount of wind if you have long hair and the sun creating shadows in your face or the sun’s brightness making you squint your eyes. Of course we can work with these elements but you need to consider these factors when choosing the location because it might effect the time of day or month we schedule the shoot.

Personal Limitations

Indoor and outdoor photography both have pros and cons. Although your office might be bright we might require use of a flash to eliminate unwanted shadows. Flashes aren’t ideal for everyone and that’s ok. This might be for medical reasons or simply because your eyes are too sensitive to the bright burst of light. We do have artificial light sources (lights that don’t flash) but in this case typically choosing somewhere with great natural light is a better choice.
